‘Gil Favor hires on to beat a rival cattle drive to Sedalia – a cattle drive headed by an outlaw and a killer’
This book was written by Frank Chester Robertson and was published in 1963.
Mushy is introduced as ‘an awkward youth of twenty, half of whose function was to divert the wrath of Wishbone’s testy temper from the others.’
This book also answered one of my largest questions: How did Mushy get his cap?
‘Mushy was the only man in the outfit who wore a cap, an old Confederate one he had picked up somewhere, and he wore it with the fond hope that strangers might think him a veteran. In consequence his fair skin was usually well blistered, but since most members of the crew had fought for the confederacy it was worth while if occasionally someone asked him in what battles he had participated. He had listened to the others and could reel them off convincingly.’

I really enjoy this book, I highly recommend for anyone to read it!
